Dental care in veterinary medicine is a holistic approach to ensuring not only the health of the teeth, but also maintaining good general health by ensuring good oral hygiene. Predominantly this involves undertaking regular dental procedures which include a scale and polish plus possible extractions.
At Vets in Zillmere we approach dental care in much the same way that human dentists do, by staging. The initial appointment is a full assessment of the mouth under general anaesthetic which includes grading each tooth visually and with a probe. Xrays are advised to be taken to look below the gumline and look for issues not obvious from looking at the teeth alone. A scale and polish is then commenced.
On pick up you are given an estimate for any extractions that may be required and these are undertaken on a separate day. This reduces the anaesthetic risk of an extended procedure time and allows time to plan extractions.
