Dr Ema Bowman
Vets in Zillmere is proud to be associated with Dr Ema Bowman, an internal medicine specialist with a special interest in anaesthesia and brachycephalic management. Dr Ema will be providing BOAS surgery at Vets in Zillmere, from January 2024.
Dr Ema is a proud kiwi having graduated from Massey University in 2008. During her career she has worked in many countries and clinics ranging from 80+ Vet specialist hospitals in America to lean to's with minimal electricity in Fiji!
The driver for Dr Ema to focus on Brachycephalics came from a passion around breed specific care and realising how profoundly life changing it was for these dogs (and their owners) when appropriate breed issues were identified and addressed at the right age.
Dr Ema’s day to day work centres on brachycephalics, where she performs 4-15 BOAS surgeries per week and consults with clients to manage the suite of brachycephalic health concerns.
In addition Ema dedicates time to providing education for vets, vet nurses, breeders and pet owners plus advocating for improved breeding and welfare standards. These tasks are both her primary motivation, and the mainstays of her role.
Through her memberships in internal medicine and additional training in anaesthesia, Dr Ema has developed a 'no stone left unturned' approach to brachycephalic management. She provides proactive multi-level (aka 5/5) upper airway surgery, high quality brachy-safe anaesthesia, and tailored preoperative and postoperative risk reduction strategies. Ema cautions that addressing the emotional needs of a brachycephalic is just as important as their surgical or anaesthetic needs - the approach needs to be truly holistic. These are dogs that often think they are more human than dog!
Dr Ema offers phone and in person consultations on anything Brachycephalic related. She performs most common brachycephalic surgeries and has a special interest in providing a low stress BOAS surgery with exceptional results and extremely low complication rates.
